Company Overview

Netezza is the market-leading provider of enterprise-class data warehouse appliances that deliver breakthrough performance and ease-of-use at a fraction of the cost of traditional data warehouses. The Netezza Performance Server system enables Fortune 1000 customers with terabytes of dynamic, detailed data to dramatically simplify even the most complex Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives. By architecturally integrating database, server and storage within a single appliance, the NPS system delivers 10 to 50 times the performance at half the cost of existing systems. The NPS system speeds through processes that would occupy most data warehouse systems for hours, or even days, thereby enabling dramatic increases in productivity across the organization. Customers who have recognized the performance benefits of Netezza's approach include Ahold USA, Amazon.com, Catalina Marketing, Cingular Wireless, CNET Networks, Epsilon, Neiman Marcus, Orange UK, Premier, Inc., Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation and The TJX Companies. Headquartered in Framingham, Mass., Netezza has offices in Washington, DC, the United Kingdom and Asia Pacific.

Relationship with Cognos

The alliance between Cognos and Netezza enables data-intensive organizations to deploy a more powerful BI foundation, while at the same time allowing them to direct a great portion of their BI spend towards application development for greater business impact. The capabilities of the ReportNet platform are well matched with the break-through performance, ease-of-use, and scalability advantages that the Netezza enterprise-class data warehouse solution was designed to offer. Together, the combined solution delivers a powerful BI foundation that gives users more meaningful access to their data - faster answers and the ability to conduct richer analyses against deeper more granular data sets. With BI user adoption increasing, organizations are finding that the ability to analyze growing volumes of detailed data in an ad-hoc manner is critical. The right BI foundation that provides ease-of-use, flexibility, and speed will empower organizations to turn their data into insight more efficiently, and will become a source of competitive differentiation. The ReportNet and NPS BI platform delivers these benefits precisely and enables organizations to stay one step ahead of their competitors.

Area of Expertise

The NPS system is fully compatible with interfaces such as ODBC and JDBC and processes ANSI SQL with no proprietary syntax required. Integration is seamless and no changes are required to legacy Cognos applications. Customers can simply redirect the database connection to Netezza and continue to use their existing data models. The NPS system when deployed with ReportNet provides strong benefits that extend the ease-of-use and lower the cost of the total BI solution. The NPS system was architected to be able to process ReportNet queries 10-50x faster compared to traditional data warehouse systems. The NPS system's unique integration of hardware, analytic- RDBMS and storage into one device accomplishes that objective through its Asymmetric Massively Parallel Processing (AMPP) (TM) architecture, built to harness the processing power of SMP and combine it with the scalability of MPP. A performance improvement of this magnitude has a material impact on the usability of BI. Users can now look at 4 years of data rather than just 4 months, or they can analyze data at a more atomic level. The NPS system also offers the lowest total cost of ownership. By delivering the data warehouse in a significantly smaller foot print, the NPS system uses less power and space and delivers significant savings in the form of utility and space costs. In addition, by leveraging off-the-shelf components for low acquisition costs, and by reducing the amount of administrative overhead required to deploy and maintain the system, the NPS system costs about half as much as traditional systems. The NPS system takes less than one DBA to manage, because with its intelligent design, traditional performance tuning is no longer required. That means no indexing, materialized views, temp space allocation and monitoring, logical volume creations of files or any of the other time-intensive manual optimization procedures required in traditional environments.
